Bridesmaid History

The Bridesmaid tradition dates back to Roman Times and their roots lie in the protection of the Bride.

The modern day function of the Bridesmaid is to attend to the Bride and accompany her to the altar on her wedding day. The Bridesmaid can be a close friend our family member and traditionally bridesmaids were women that had not married. The inclusion of Bridesmaids in the marriage ceremony is believed to stem back to Roman times when bridesmaids accompanied the bride on her journey to the groom’s town. They acted as protection and in some ancient cultures the Bridesmaids often used to dress in the same clothing as the Bride to cause confusion and ward off evil spirits.. When a Roman law was passed making it obligatory for the wedding ceremony to have at least ten witnesses (this was thought to be a deterrent to ward off these evil spirits that traditionally attended wedding ceremonies) the bridesmaid tradition gained prominence and Bridesmaids were often seen dressed in the same outfits as the bride. And we can see in an extract from the Times that the tradition of bridesmaids dressing in similar clothes as the bride was prominent in Victorian times. In the description of the Queen's marriage given in the Times for February 11, 1840, the following sentence occurs: "Her bridesmaids and train-bearers were similarly attired, save that they had no veils.”

 When the bride throws her bouquet it was a tradition that only a bridesmaid could catch it and the lucky bridesmaid would then be the next to marry. Traditionally a bridesmaid who slipped or stumbled while walking towards the altar would never find the love of her life and would remain unmarried and childless leading bridesmaids to practice this walk down the aisle to avoid tripping and being afflicted with the curse. Becoming a Bridesmaid three times was also considered very unlucky and it was thought that anyone young lady befalling this fate would have to be chosen as a bridesmaid on a least four more occasions before they would marry. That’s where the saying ‘Always the Bridesmaid never the Bride‘comes from. The number of Bridesmaids attending the Bride on her wedding day was often an indication of the family’s wealth and social standing; the greater number of bridesmaid the higher the family’s social standing. In ancient times the colours of the bridesmaid’s dresses were pastel colours in shades of light blue yellow and pink as close as possible to white to complement the bride. In England during Victorian times the cutting of the cake was symbolic for Bridesmaids and small charms where attached to ribbons and placed between layers of the cake. These hidden charms were seen as luck for their futures and each one would have significance like having children or falling in love. In Greece a similar tradition is played out on the Wednesday before the wedding day when the bridesmaids bake cakes with coins in them to bring luck.

The modern bridesmaid’s tend to play different role in supporting the bride. Brides often chose a close friend who will help the bride chose her wedding dress and help her with her accessories for her most important day. On the wedding day tan older bridesmaid will help the bride with her makeup and hair to ensure she looks beautiful. Younger bridesmaids are these days daughters or close relations of the bride and groom and play a more decorative role than their older counterparts.
